Support during the pandemic

Syangja’s Waling Municipality took action when farmers needed them the most.

“When the government imposed the lockdown, I was really worried about my vegetables. However, the municipality stepped in and bought them all,” says farmer Lok Bahadur Gurung of Waling Municipality – 2.

With local agricultural products being unable to reach markets due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the municipality - located in Syangja District, Gandaki Pradesh – intervened. It has since been buying and managing the supply of agricultural products in all 14 of its wards, with the move benefiting over 20 farmers. “This has led to fresh vegetables for locals, and a steady income for farmers,” says Mayor Dilip Pratap Khand.

Kamal Pati Dumre of Ward No. 14 is appreciative of the municipality’s efforts. “They made the right move,” he says.

Waling Municipality, UNDP Nepal’s SDG Localization Project and local partner Diyalo have been collecting vegetables and other commodities under the leadership of the Agriculture and Livestock Department.
