    DFID, UNDP sign US$ 3.2 m MoU to implement national HIV/AIDS in Nepal

    The Department For International Development (DFID) and UNDP have signed US$ 3.2 (' 2.2 m) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to continue supporting the implementation of the national HIV/AIDS response in Nepal for 2009. With this, DFID's total contribution since 2005 to the national HIV/AIDS response in Nepal amounts to US$13.8m (' 9,400,000).

    UNDP, Government of Nepal sign US$ 1.3 m (Rs. 105 million) National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) to Climate Change

    The Government of Nepal (GoN) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on behalf of donors today signed a US$ 1.3m (Rs. 105 million) project for the preparation and implementation of the National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) to climate change. The project is funded by DFID (US$ 875,000), Government of Denmark (US$200,000) and UNDP/Global Environment Facility/Least Developed Country Fund (US$ 250,000) to help the government take leadership on harmonised donor approach to address climate change issues in Nepal.

    UNDP, Royal Norwegian Embassy sign additional US$ 1.5 million (NRs. 114 million) to bring peace dividend to marginalized communities

    The Royal Norwegian Embassy and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed an additional amount of US$ 1.5 million (NOK 10 million) for the continuation of the Quick Impact for Peace Support Initiative (QIPSI) in 11 eastern Terai and 9 mid and far western districts of Nepal, under the UNDP supported Programme implemented by the Ministry of Local Development (MLD). The agreement was signed by His Excellency, Thor Gislesen, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to Nepal and UNDP Country Director for Nepal, Ms. Anne-Isabelle Degryse-Blateau.

    Government of Nepal and UNDP sign US$ 2 million (Rs. 13.5 crores) project on enhancing access to justice

    The Government of Nepal and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today signed a US$ 2 million project entitled 'Enhancing Access to Justice through Legal and Judicial Reforms Project'. In the presence of the Chief Justice Mr Kedar Prasad Giri, Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nepal, Dr. Ram Krishna Timalsena signed the document on behalf of the Government of Nepal.

    Government of Nepal and UNDP sign US$ 3.7 million project to assist the Election Commission of Nepal

    The Government of Nepal and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today signed a US$3.7 million project entitled 'Institutional Strengthening and Professional Development Support for the Election Commission of Nepal'. The Project consists of a 3-year technical assistance initiative to the Election Commission from 2008 to 2011. Joint Secretary of the Election Commission, Mr. Laxman Bhattarai signed the document on behalf of the Government of Nepal.

    Earthquake Risk Reduction and Recovery Preparedness Programme for South Asian Region kicks off

    The five South Asian countries- Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan meet begins in Kathmandu today, for a 3 day workshop to plan and implement earthquake risk reduction strategies integrating disaster preparedness, mitigation and post disaster recovery. In order to address earthquake risks and vulnerabilities of the South Asian region, UNDP has initiated a regional programme for Earthquake Risk Reduction and Recovery Preparedness with the funding support from the Government of Japan. By bringing together a range of stakeholders, the workshop aims to facilitate the process of information exchange and technical cooperation at the national and regional level.

    Taking the Global Call to Action on Gender Equality and Women Empowerment, Climate Change and Importance of School Feeding

    The biggest all-female expedition to climb Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) begins on 17 April 2008. The expedition consists of 10 women, representing a range of castes and ethnic groups in Nepal. The women will climb the world's highest peak to show that they are equally skilled, courageous and strong as male climbers. They will also draw attention to gender equality and women empowerment, the effects of climate change in the Himalayas as well as raise awareness about the millions of children who go to school hungry in Asia.

    Country Programme Action Plan signed : US$ 190.59 million grant assistance provided

    The Government of Nepal signed the Country Programme Action Plan documents today with UNDP, UNICEF and UNFPA for a grant assistance of US$ 190.59 million. UNDP (US$ 94.38 million), UNICEF (US $ 68.21) and UNFPA (US$ 28 million) are providing this grant assistance for the next three years in support of the Government Interim Plan (2008-2010).

    WFP and UNDP Support First Inclusive Nepali Female Everest Expedition

    Today, the United Nations World Food Programme and the United Nations Development Programme through the support of the European Commission announced their support for the First Inclusive Women Sagarmatha Expedition 2008 (FIWSE 2008). This expedition of ten Nepali climbers includes women from multiple castes and ethnicities of Nepal ' the first Mt. Everest expedition of its kind.

    Nepal, one of the countries facing severe risks from climate change!

    'Avalanches and floods pose special risks to densely populated mountain regions. One of the countries facing severe risks today is Nepal, where glaciers are retreating at a rate of several metres each year. Lakes formed by melting glacier waters are expanding at an alarming rate - the Tsho Rolpa lake being a case in point, having increased more than sevenfold in the last 50 years', cites the Global Human Development Report 2007 launched today by Dr. Jagadish Chandra Pokharel, Honourable Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission in Kathmandu.

    Government of Nepal and UNDP sign US$ 1.9 million Rural Energy Project

    The Government of Nepal and UNDP signed a 12.5 crores (US$ 1.9 million) rural energy project (phase III) for a period of three years (2007-2010). Both UNDP and World Bank are continuing their support in this phase III-Rural Energy Development Programme. While UNDP is contributing US$ 1.9 million for the project, the World Bank parallel funding of US$ 3.8 million for the project goes to the communities through Alternative Energy Promotion Centre' the executing agency for the project.

    The United Nations System in Nepal has responded rapidly to the national crisis caused by flooding across Nepal, and the request of the Government of Nepal for assistance. UNMIN has responded to the Government request to make its helicopters available, and with financial support from UNDP has flown rescue teams including members of the Nepal Army, police, Red Cross, government officials and UN agencies for evacuation, relief and assessment operations.

    Government of Nepal and UNDP sign US$ 3.8 million mini hydro project

    The Government of Nepal (GoN) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today signed a US$ 3.85 million Khimti Neighbourhood Development (KiND) Project to be implemented in Dolakha and Ramechhap districts. The project will be funded by the Government of Norway, Himal Power Limited (a private power producer company) and UNDP (US$ 200,000) for the period of 2007 to 2010. The Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) will be the implementing partner.

    UNDP signs US$ 4.9 million contract with the Global Fund

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed US$ 4.9 million "phase two" agreement with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) as the second principle recipient (PR 2). The National Centre for AIDS and STIs Control (NCASC) signed US$ 2.3 million Individual Agreement with GFATM as first principle recipient (PR1).

    The Government of Nepal and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today signed a US$ 4 million project entitled 'Conservation and Sustainable Use of Wetlands in Nepal' to be implemented in the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve in Sunsari and its buffer zone districts and the Ghodaghodi Lake Complex of Kailali district.
