Melamchi handover

As part of a joint initiative on Community-based Disaster Management in Asia (CDBM), vulnerable communities of Ganesthan, Sindhukhola Watershed, of Melamchi in Sindhupalchowk district have now equipped with emergency supplies including a server that provides disaster risk information.

Amid a handover function in Melamchi on 6 February, the National Disaster Reduction Center of China (NDRCC) provided emergency items like life jackets, fire extinguishers and medical kits to 20 vulnerable families in the area. The project is being implemented by UNDP Nepal in coordination with UNDP China, and financial support from DFID. Handing over the emergency kits, Mr. Yang Siquan, Chief Engineer of NDRCC, Ministry of Civil Affairs of China emphasized the necessity to understand disaster risk at community level and the capacity building to enhance the resilience of the vulnerable community. Assistant Country Director of UNDP Nepal, Mr. Vijay Singh informed that with the disaster risk map provided by NDRCC, vulnerable communities should be aware of the risk and preparedness from their end. Chief Administrative Officer of Melamchi Municipality Devi Thapaliya pointed out the necessity to strengthen capacity of IT personnel to operate and maintain servers.
