National Wetland Committee launchedMar 4, 2010
In an effort to conserve the Wetlands and to ensure their sustainable use, the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation (MFSC) has finally launched the National Wetland Committee (NWC). The Conservation and Sustainable Use of Wetlands in Nepal project supported by the UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme and IUCN played a crucial role in making the NWC formation process participatory, inclusive and consultative.
The committee consists of 11 members from various environment related Ministries and is chaired by the Hon'ble Minister for Forests and Soil Conservation.
The National Wetlands Committee is expected to provide strategic policy guidance for mainstreaming wetland issues into the national policy and planning frameworks. It is expected to play a catalytic role to ensure inter-sectoral coordination, cooperation, collaboration and participation of Wetland stakeholders.
Over 100 representatives from various sectors such as Government, NGOs, academia, conservation partners, civil societies and media participated in the launch event.
