    Sensitizing the CA member for DRM issues

    The Ministry of Home Affairs organized a sensitization workshop on 29th September 2011 and an Earthquake drill on 30th September for the Constituent Assembly members in Kathmandu to raise the awareness on Disaster Risk Management issues among the policy makers. UNDP’s Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Programme (CDRMP) supported the events.

    Efforts to boost 'Third Gender' rights in Nepal

    On 21 December 2007, the Supreme Court of Nepal rendered a landmark decision in ordering the Government to amend all discriminatory laws against LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex) and formally recognize the LGBTI as ‘third gender’ in accordance with their sexual and gender identities.

    Government, donors undertake field visit for joint programme

    The Government officials and development partners of Local Governance Community Development Programme (LGCDP)comprising of representatives from ADB, DFID, CIDA, Danish embassy, UNDP/UN System and Norwegian embassy undertook a joint field visit to Kailali and Kanchanpur districts. Lead by the Ministry of Local Development (MLD), altogether 17 representatives of different agencies took active part in the visit programme.

    Bringing government departments in closer collaboration around the issues of disaster management and soil conservation can help safeguard livelihoods and contribute to more effective government investments in Nepal. Given its unique topography, linking upstream communities at risk from deforestation and landslides to the downstream communities who bear the brunt of resulting flash flooding can help foster a more holistic and cost effective strategies for reducing disaster risk.

    Planning for Early Recovery

In high disaster risk countries like Nepal UNDP needs a plan outlining how it will both support coordination and programming that will help the government and the community to rebuild the victims’ lives and livelihoods in the wake of a medium to large scale disaster.

    UNDP, AusAID sign cost sharing agreement to boost micro-enterprises

    UNDP and AusAID have signed a 1.5 million AUD cost sharing agreement to further support the Micro-enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP). The additional fund received will be spent on improving the policy environment at the macro level, strengthening the capacity of the local bodies, non-government and private sector organisations.

    The National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) conducted a simulation exercise in Kathmandu recently with the scenario of 7.2 magnitude earthquake to test the draft Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for response coordination at the national level.     Renewable Energy for Rural Livelihood programme kicks off

    The Government of Nepal (GoN)—Ministry of Finance (MoF), Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) and the United Nations Development programme (UNDP) have signed the project document for implementing Renewable Energy for Rural Livelihood (RERL) programme in 26 remote districts of Nepal. The total budget of the programme for the period between 1 April 2011 to 31 December 2012 is US$ 1,508,150.

    Political leaders get together to discuss Constitution

    With less than a month to meet the deadline of promulgating the new Constitution, Nepal’s top political party leaders— Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, UCPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepali Congress chairman Sushil Koirala and Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party (TMDP) chairman Mahanta Thakur came together to express their commitment and urgency to have the new Constitution within the stipulated time frame.

    Extended assistance for the ex-combatants to begin a new life

    There are 2,397 VMLRs who have contacted the Programme and 1,995 have received career counseling as of 15 February 2011. They have been referred to specifically designed livelihood opportunities. Out of the total 1,377 VMLRs referred, 583 trainees have completed their training and 141 graduates have already found employment or started their own business.

    South-South Cooperation for promoting Gender Responsive Policing

    The UNDP Nepal Country Office in coordination with the UNDP Country Office in Afghanistan received a delegation comprising of Senior Officials from the Ministry of Interior, Afghan Women's Network and Civil Society to learn about Democratic Policing Policies and Practices with an added focus on Community Policing activities including Gender Based Violence (GBV) prevention and responses.
