    National Planners trained on mainstreaming Disaster Risk Management and Climate Risk Management

    Sustainable Disaster Risk Management (DRM), Climate Risk Management (CRM) and the protection of development gains in Nepal requires the mainstreaming of these approaches into planning, policies and programmes. In recognition of the importance of these issues, a national training on mainstreaming DRM and CRM was jointly organized by the National Planning Commission and the UNDP Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Programme with technical support from Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre.

    Africa and Asia to lead urban population growth in the next four decades

    Africa’s urban population will increase from 414 million to over 1.2 billion by 2050 while that of Asia will soar from 1.9 billion to 3.3 billion. Both regions together will account for 86 per cent of all increase in the world’s urban population according to the 2011 Revision of the World Urbanization Prospects, launched by the United Nations today.

    Kirtipur masons trained on earthquake resilient building

    Thirty two masons from the Kirtipur municipality were trained in earthquake resilient technology in building construction from March 26 to 30, 2012. The training was led by the Kirtipur municipality and supported by UNDP Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Programme (CDRMP) with technical service from National Society for Earthquake Technology/ Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (NSET/ADPC).

    Nepali Planners Getting ready for Risk Sensitive Land Use Planning

    UNDP Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Programme (CDRMP) is supporting for an e-learning courses on Risk Sensitive Land Use Planning (RSLUP). The key objective of the course is to orient and sensitize the planners and engineers of Government and Municipal staffs on Risk sensitive land Use Planning. The course started on 12th March 2012 and will run until 29th April 2012.

    10.19m voters digitally registered

    As of mid February 2012, the signatures, fingerprints and photographs of 10.19 million voters (10,190,689 citizens) have been digitallycaptured. The Election Commission of Nepal (ECN) started the nationwide voter registration of all citizens 16 years and above in September 2010 with the support of UNDP Election Support Project (ESP).

    AusAID, UNDP sign AUD 3.1 m cost sharing agreement to reduce poverty in Nepal

    UNDP Micro-enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP)and AusAID have once again ventured on a new partnership (AUD 3.1 million or US$ 3.3 m) to reduce poverty in Nepal. This is expected to directly benefit 5500 entrepreneurs and create 8000 new jobs in 2012. With this, the total funding of AusAID for MEDEP will amount to AUD 9.015m (US$ 9.6 m).

    Medicinal plants help reduce human-wildlife conflict

    The UNDP Western Terai Landscape Complex Project (WTLCP) has been promoting Mentha and Camomilecultivation near the protected and buffer-zone areas for the last five years. These aromatic plants are high value cash crops that grow very well in this region. This is also the best non-lethal way to keep unruly rhinos away from farms and avoid crop destruction and the resultant human-wildlife conflict.

    US$ 5.7 million approved for life-saving HIV drugs and supplies

    UNDP in Nepal has signed the US$5.7 million agreement with the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) for Round 7 Phase 2 grant. UNDP received the first of two disbursements—US$2.4 million, from the GFATM on 19 October 2011.

    Handover of fire safety equipment to 5 Municipalities of Kathmandu Valley

    A number of recent reports have underscored that making Nepal safer will require strong first response capacity. In Nepal, every year fire causes significant loss of life and property. Annually there are more than 1500 fires across the country, costing more than 43 lives, and NRs 350 million in damage. Densely populated urban centers are particularly prone to fire hazards.
