    Government of Nepal and UNDP sign US$ 2 million (Rs. 13.5 crores) project on enhancing access to justice

    The Government of Nepal and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today signed a US$ 2 million project entitled 'Enhancing Access to Justice through Legal and Judicial Reforms Project'. In the presence of the Chief Justice Mr Kedar Prasad Giri, Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nepal, Dr. Ram Krishna Timalsena signed the document on behalf of the Government of Nepal.

    Government of Nepal and UNDP sign US$ 3.7 million project to assist the Election Commission of Nepal

    The Government of Nepal and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today signed a US$3.7 million project entitled 'Institutional Strengthening and Professional Development Support for the Election Commission of Nepal'. The Project consists of a 3-year technical assistance initiative to the Election Commission from 2008 to 2011. Joint Secretary of the Election Commission, Mr. Laxman Bhattarai signed the document on behalf of the Government of Nepal.

    Earthquake Risk Reduction and Recovery Preparedness Programme for South Asian Region kicks off

    The five South Asian countries- Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan meet begins in Kathmandu today, for a 3 day workshop to plan and implement earthquake risk reduction strategies integrating disaster preparedness, mitigation and post disaster recovery. In order to address earthquake risks and vulnerabilities of the South Asian region, UNDP has initiated a regional programme for Earthquake Risk Reduction and Recovery Preparedness with the funding support from the Government of Japan. By bringing together a range of stakeholders, the workshop aims to facilitate the process of information exchange and technical cooperation at the national and regional level.

    Ryutaro Hashimoto Asia Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED) Award 2008

    UNDP GEF/SGP grantee, Manahari Development Institute-Nepal, has won the ‘Ryutaro Hashimoto Asia Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED) Award 2008’ - a GOLD (1st) prize in recognition of the outstanding contribution in promoting environmental management and sustainable development. The award was given in the 4th Plenary Meeting (award giving ceremony) at Davao, Phillipines on 25 July 2008.

    HIV/AIDS and Mobility

    The SAARC-UNDP-ILO regional workshop, Leadership and Development Challenges in Addressing HIV/AIDS and Mobility held in Kathmandu (23-25 June) agreed upon that migration per se is not a risk factor for HIV, rather it is the conditions under which people move that often makes them more vulnerable to HIV. Therefore, there is a need to integrate HIV/AIDS into policies and programmes for migrant workers and their families.

    Deputy Speaker a new star in BBC World Service Trust radio drama

    Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chitralekha Yadav embarked on a new career as a radio actor this month when she played herself in the radio drama Katha Mitho Sarangiko. The drama is produced by the BBC World Service Trust as part of the UNDP Participation in Peace and Constitution Building project.

    On 25 May, the tenth and final Nepali member of the First Inclusive Women's Sagarmatha Expedition (FIWSE) completed her summit bid, making FIWSE the most successful female expedition to conquer Sagarmatha (Mount Everest).

    Taking the Global Call to Action on Gender Equality and Women Empowerment, Climate Change and Importance of School Feeding

    The biggest all-female expedition to climb Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) begins on 17 April 2008. The expedition consists of 10 women, representing a range of castes and ethnic groups in Nepal. The women will climb the world's highest peak to show that they are equally skilled, courageous and strong as male climbers. They will also draw attention to gender equality and women empowerment, the effects of climate change in the Himalayas as well as raise awareness about the millions of children who go to school hungry in Asia.

    Country Programme Action Plan signed : US$ 190.59 million grant assistance provided

    The Government of Nepal signed the Country Programme Action Plan documents today with UNDP, UNICEF and UNFPA for a grant assistance of US$ 190.59 million. UNDP (US$ 94.38 million), UNICEF (US $ 68.21) and UNFPA (US$ 28 million) are providing this grant assistance for the next three years in support of the Government Interim Plan (2008-2010).

    WFP and UNDP Support First Inclusive Nepali Female Everest Expedition

    Today, the United Nations World Food Programme and the United Nations Development Programme through the support of the European Commission announced their support for the First Inclusive Women Sagarmatha Expedition 2008 (FIWSE 2008). This expedition of ten Nepali climbers includes women from multiple castes and ethnicities of Nepal ' the first Mt. Everest expedition of its kind.

    UNDP launches US$ 2 million Quick Impact Programme in Terai

    As part of direct support to peace building efforts, UNDP has launched a special project called Quick Impact and Peace Support Initiatives (QIPSI) in the 10 districts of Eastern, Central and Western Terai (Saptari, Sunsari Siraha, Dhanusha, Mahottarai, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Bara, Parsa, and Kapilbastu) which are affected by the on-going conflict. For this purpose, UNDP has also hired seven field monitors to work in the ten districts.

    Raising awareness about constituent assembly polls

    In the UNDP ‘Participation in Peace’ project, the BBC World Service Trust recorded the latest edition(12th) of the discussion programme Sajha Sawal (common questions) with Sujata Koirala, Minister Without Portfolio (daughter of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala). The programme was on air in BBC Nepali Sewa on 3 February. A live audience of more than 60 people drawn from local groups and members of UNDP supported community organisations took part in the interaction while a reporter phoned in questions from local people in Sunsari, her own constituency and home district.

    Verification of Maoist army personnel completed

    For the past year, UNDP has been assisting UNMIN to conduct the registration and verification of Maoist army personnel, providing experts from the UNDP Afghanistan reintegration programme and from Rwanda, who assisted with the design and management of process and trained a team of Nepalese registration and verification staff for data entry and processing.
