    Nepal President reads the Stand-Up Pledge, putting spotlight on poverty in Nepal

    More than four hundred people including Ministers, Constituent Assembly members, the diplomatic corp, UN Agency heads, media and civil society gathered at Shital Niwas today, at the office of the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal where the Rt. Hon'ble President, Dr. Ram Baran Yadav read the Stand Up pledge.

    What comes first, peace or constitution?

    The debate on, ‘What comes first, peace or constitution?’ continued for over two hours between the members of the Constituent Assembly, representatives of the civil society, NGOs and media during the panel discussion organised by the Centre for Constitutional Dialogue (CCD) and UNDP on the occasion of International Day for Peace. In 249 days, the new constitution has to be drafted and it is a Herculean task to incorporate all the issues and shape up a final document that meets every citizen’s expectations. Until the new constitution is drafted, the peace process still looks fragile.

    UNDP supports early recovery in the flood affected areas

    In order to support the Koshi flood affected victims start a new livelihood, after their return to their original places, UNDP joined hands with WFP in its Food for Work programme with cash top up in 23 wards of 4 affected Village Development Committees (VDCs)- Shripur, Haripur, Paschim Kushaha and Laukahi.

    Report on Assessment of Village Development Committee Governance and the Use of the Block Grants Launched

    The report, Assessment of Village Development Committee Governance and the Use of the Block Grants was launched today in Kathmandu by the Honourable Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission, Dr. Yuba Raj Khatiwada. The report is expected to help guide the work of the Government, the VDCs, civil society and the donor organisations involved in supporting local governance and development.

    Government officials participate in peace-sensitive development planning workshop

    Over 40 officials from the National Planning Commission and Line Ministries participated in the workshop- Strengthening Collaborative Leadership Capacities for Peace-sensitive Development Planning and Governance, organised by the UNDP Peace Building and Recovery unit with support from the Bureau of Crisis Prevention and Recovery, UNDP HQs.

    Constituent Assembly members form MDGs task force to fight against poverty

    The Constituent Assembly members have formed a team of ten to champion the cause of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) inside the Parliament and in their respective constituencies, supported by the United Nations Millennium Campaign. The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Robert Piper met the CA members recently and briefed them on the importance of MDGs for Nepal.

    Voices of the marginalized communities

    A one-day interaction programme on the ‘Role of Media on the Issues of Marginalized Communities’, was organised by the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) at the Centre for Constitutional Dialogue (CCD) on 20 July, chaired by Mr. Dharmendra Jha, President of the FNJ. The programme was inaugurated by the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly, Rt. Honourable Subash Chandra Nembang, participated by the CA members, civil society organizations, editors and representatives of the media.

    Political Transformation and Inclusion critical for building peace in Nepal

    Today Nepal is in transition from conflict to peace and from authoritarian rule to democracy and has the chance to redefine both the nation and the state. It is an opportunity for political 'transformation', to root out age old practices by ensuring equality, justice and greater voice for excluded groups. Deepening democracy and strengthening the rule of law are critical in order to give peace a chance of success', says the new 2009 Nepal Human Development Report launched in Kathmandu today.

    Australia provides AUD4.5 million to Nepal through UNDP to support micro-enterprise development

    Loktantrik Sambaad (Democracy Dialogues)

    The UNDP/Support to Participatory Constitution Building in Nepal (SPCBN) project has been active in organising ‘Loktantrik Sambaad’ (Democracy Dialogues) throughout Nepal. The project has funded 15 NGOs, representing the historically marginalized communities of Nepal, including: Dalits, Indigenous Peoples, Madhesis, Disabled, Remote Areas and Youth, to collect submissions for the Constituent Assembly (CA).
