    Government officials participate in peace-sensitive development planning workshop

    Over 40 officials from the National Planning Commission and Line Ministries participated in the workshop- Strengthening Collaborative Leadership Capacities for Peace-sensitive Development Planning and Governance, organised by the UNDP Peace Building and Recovery unit with support from the Bureau of Crisis Prevention and Recovery, UNDP HQs.

    Constituent Assembly members form MDGs task force to fight against poverty

    The Constituent Assembly members have formed a team of ten to champion the cause of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) inside the Parliament and in their respective constituencies, supported by the United Nations Millennium Campaign. The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Robert Piper met the CA members recently and briefed them on the importance of MDGs for Nepal.

    Voices of the marginalized communities

    A one-day interaction programme on the ‘Role of Media on the Issues of Marginalized Communities’, was organised by the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) at the Centre for Constitutional Dialogue (CCD) on 20 July, chaired by Mr. Dharmendra Jha, President of the FNJ. The programme was inaugurated by the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly, Rt. Honourable Subash Chandra Nembang, participated by the CA members, civil society organizations, editors and representatives of the media.

    Political Transformation and Inclusion critical for building peace in Nepal

    Today Nepal is in transition from conflict to peace and from authoritarian rule to democracy and has the chance to redefine both the nation and the state. It is an opportunity for political 'transformation', to root out age old practices by ensuring equality, justice and greater voice for excluded groups. Deepening democracy and strengthening the rule of law are critical in order to give peace a chance of success', says the new 2009 Nepal Human Development Report launched in Kathmandu today.

    Australia provides AUD4.5 million to Nepal through UNDP to support micro-enterprise development

    The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed a AUD4.5m cost-sharing agreement to continue support for the Micro-Enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP) in Nepal.

    Loktantrik Sambaad (Democracy Dialogues)

    The UNDP/Support to Participatory Constitution Building in Nepal (SPCBN) project has been active in organising ‘Loktantrik Sambaad’ (Democracy Dialogues) throughout Nepal. The project has funded 15 NGOs, representing the historically marginalized communities of Nepal, including: Dalits, Indigenous Peoples, Madhesis, Disabled, Remote Areas and Youth, to collect submissions for the Constituent Assembly (CA).

    Viewing Nepal’s progress towards peace: UNDP/UNFPA Executive Board members in Nepal

    Eight members of the joint Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) from donor and programme countries visited Nepal from 18-25 April. The participating member states were Angola, Azerbaijan, Haiti,Mexico, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Sweden and the United Republic of Tanzania.

    ‘Communicating with Authority’

    The Centre for Constitutional Dialogue (CCD) recently organised a training on `Communicating with Authority’ for the Constitutent Assembly (CA) members and Civil Society. The session included topics such as giving short speeches and statements. The training covered both theoretical and practical sessions where the participants delivered short speeches in given time and structure.

    Supporting the localization of Millennium Development Goals

    A joint mission from UNDP Regional Centre Bangkok and SNV Asia Regional Office, Vietnam under the UNDP-SNV (Netherlands Development Organisation) partnership for cooperation agreement - Strengthening local level capacities for achieving the MDGs, visited Nepal from 14-23 February. The UNDP-SNV partnership has been supporting the ongoing project Localization of MDGs in District Planning and Monitoring in Nepal. This project is implemented by the Ministry of Local Development in 5 districts- Jumla, Humla, Mugu and Dolpa and Taplejung.

    Developing capacity for peace

    UNDP’s Assistance to the Peace Process in Nepal (APPN) project has been providing technical assistance to the peace process since the beginning of 2007. At the request of the Government, the project ran a one-day workshop on 21 February to bring out the priorities and plan of action for formulating a new project to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction (MoPR), to implement its mandate for a successful peace process.
