    South-South Cooperation for promoting Gender Responsive Policing

    Access to forest increased for the landless poor …….

    The UNDP Western Terai Landscape Complex Project (WTLCP) has facilitated the formation of three new community forest users’ groups in Kanchanpur, a far-western terai district. With this initiative, 886 additional households comprising of 5965 people will have access to forest resources.

    DFID, UNDP sign agreement to bring major election reforms

    The Department for International Development (DFID) and UNDP have signed a cost sharing agreement of US$ 0.59 million for ’Institutional Strengthening and Professional Development Support for the establishment of the Central Data Centre’, to be administered by UNDP Electoral Support Project. This assistance is further going to support the Election Commission of Nepal’s (ECN) ongoing voter registration programme.

    Nepal gears up for emergencies

    A National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has been set up under the Disaster Management Section of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), to direct disaster response operation in a coordinated and effective manner. Under the current Natural Calamity Act, the NEOC will operate as the hub for coordination, communication and management of effective response to disasters in Nepal.

    16-days of activism campaign against Gender Based Violence

    Following the historical declaration in Nov 2009 by the Rt. Honourable Prime Minister Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal, marking the year 2010 as to end gender based violence in Nepal along with the announcement for the National Plan of Action 2010? a Gender Based Violence (GBV) unit was established in the office of the Prime Minister to monitor and collect datas related to GBV.

    Anti Corruption Day observed

    On the occasion of the Anti Corruption Day - 9 December, a hotline (a toll free number -16600122233) has been established by the Central Investigation for Abuse of Authority (CIAA) - a facility supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support the Government of Nepal in its efforts to reduce corruption - by enabling the Nepalese citizens to confidently report directly against any incidents witnessed, involving corruption or bribe.

    Government takes steps to protect biological corridors

    The Western Terai Landscape Complex Project (WTLCP) supported by UNDP and a range of donors, has been working since 2006 for the conservation of the three biological corridors - Laljhadhi, Basanta and Khata situated in the western terai (plains). The main challenges for these corridors are illegal encroachment for settlement, agricultural extension and uncontrolled grazing.

    NAPA launched

    ollowing the Cabinet approval, Rt. Honourable Prime Minister and Chairperson of Climate Change Council, Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal launched the National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) document and the Nepal Climate Change and Development Portal, bringing to fruition an 18 months long effort involving six line ministries and more than 80 institutions across the country, including civil society, private sector and the media.

    ECN, Denmark and UNDP sign Cost Sharing Agreement: Election Commission receives additional US$ 2.1m support for voter registration

    A Cost Sharing Agreement was signed today between the Election Commission of Nepal (ECN), the Danish Embassy and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for the US$ 2.1 million support being provided by the Government of Denmark for the new Voter Registration system. UNDP as the Election Commission?s coordinating partner of the donors will administer the funds through its Electoral Support Project (ESP).

    Voter registration starts

    The first phase of voter registration exercise started from 15 September in 58 municipalities of 43 districts across Nepal. The Election Commission of Nepal (ECN), through technical assistance of UNDP Electoral Support Project (ESP) has begun this modern registration process with photograph and biometric system to create a credible voter list. This includes registering every eligible citizen by digitally capturing their photo, fingerprints and signature.

    Gender-responsive policing in post conflict countries

    A seminar on Gender-Responsive Policing in Post-Conflict Countries was organised jointly by the Nepal Police and UNDP through its Global Programme on Advancing Gender Equality in Post-Conflict Settings supported by the Bureau of Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR). The seminar is one of the first engagements with the Nepal Police by UNDP through its Access to Justice project.

    Democracy Dialogues for an inclusive Constitution

    Over the last 18 months, the UNDP village-based "Democracy Dialogues" have been an important means to receive suggestions on the new Constitution from Nepal?s remote and isolated rural population. These Dialogues have also been an important channel to remind Nepal's political leaders about laws and policies that have been passed -- but never implemented.
