November 2005; Tanahun is renowned all over the country for its black maas gram and yam. The masyeura (dried dumplings) made with these two ingredients is equally popular nationwide. In order to cash on this opportunity, a female entrepreneur in the district decided to take up masyeura making as an enterprise and submitted a proposal to PPP-Tanahun Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCI) for necessary support. The Public-Private Partnership Committee (PPPC) decided to support the venture as the inputs required for the enterprise would be channelised through Self Help Organisation (SHOs) promoted under PPP-Tanahun CCI.

Mrs. Shrestha has already undergone a Micro Enterprise Creating training programme jointly conducted by Tanahun CCI and the Local Trust Fund/Board (LTFB) Tanahun, and is going about making masyeura in a big way. Her target market are the consumers in Damauli, Pokhara, Narayanghat and Kathmandu.

With an initial investment of Rs. 175,000, the masyerua makers expect to make Rs. 100,000 a year, which is a 58% return on investment by producing 6000 kgs of masyeura per annum. The Agricultural Development Bank has also shown interest in providing loan for the project.

As yam and maas are harvested just once a year, Mrs. Shrestha has to stock up on the gram to last long-term production. She, and other interested farmers have also taken necessary training on preparation and packaging of masyeura. This training was a joint effort of the Tanahun CCI, Rural Urban Partnership Programme (RUPP) and the Cottage & Small Industry Office. The unit starts production from April 2000.
