Realization that education is Important dawns upon women of Lakurdanda, Dolakha
Among the different themes that UNDP has emphasized upon, women empowerment has begun to be seen in several villages where the Village Development Programme of Local Governance Programme (LGP) has been launched.
Manakumari Tamang of Lakuridanda VDC of Dolakha district is at present studying in class four. She has joined the same school where her two children are studying. At present she is studying in class four and she goes to school everyday with her children in her school uniform. When asked why did she join the school even after becoming a daughter-in-law and a mother of two kids (a traditional concept in villages that daughter in-laws do not pursue higher studies after marriage), she replies " after the launching of Village Development Programme through Social Mobilisation in our VDC, I too became a member and even wanted to become a manager of the CO. But nobody agreed to my becoming a manager since I was illiterate. I was heartbroken and felt humiliated. I then decided that I will go to school and learn to read and write. I will show that I can become a manager too."
Manakumari further says that at first all the people in the village started laughing at her but now there are seven more such women who have started going to school. Now the feeling has come among the others that they too should study. The more Manakumari studies she feels like studying more. She is not at all confused but can understand and grasp everything very quickly. She is committed to pass high school and get a job. Manakumari's husband is in the army and he is proud that his wife is going to school. He is overwhelmed that though he did not get the opportunity to study, his wife is studying and is eager to educate her. This has led other women to do the same which is indeed a step forward!
